    Youkihi Orange Medaka

    News & New Items
    Hey Folks,

Don't forget to order next week if you are trying to avoid going to the airport the week of Thanksgiving. We will be here packing and shipping fish for you to receive Tuesday and Wednesday the week of Thanksgiving, but if you're on an every other week schedule I'd strongly suggest ordering next week. I've heard plenty of stores say that Black Friday skips their fish department, but I've also talked to plenty of stores that have great weekend of sales after Thanksgiving. Stock up on my cheap fish on my specials page and pass it along to your customers.

Youkihi medakas are in stock. Medakas are neat fish, only distantly related to anything else in the trade. The genus Oryzias is widespread in southeast Asia. There are many species although not many are found in the trade. The Japanese medaka has been kept as ornamental fish for centuries, and if Wikipedia is to believed has over 400 varieties in cultivation in Japan. They've never achieved anywhere near that level of popularity in the US, but they are slowly becoming more popular. These are sub-tropical fish and ideally suited for life outside during warm months. They'll handle temps down to 60ish, so too late for a lot of you, but still a good tub fish for southern states for most of the year, and even up north during the summer. While they look good in tanks, most of the selectively bred strains are bred to look good when viewed from above in a small garden pond or tub, kind of like miniature koi. As far as how they act in a tank, they're a lot like the smaller blue-eye rainbows. Not closely related, but they act similar. Very active, constantly courting and showing off. A fine choice for a community tank with smaller fish, or a great species tank candidate. I also have the related but more tropical and much brighter daisy rice fish in stock right now.

Flyer plecos are in from Colombia. These are very different from the commonly seen fancy plecos. They are flat, coming from areas of high current. They're also very spikey. Very reasonably sized, they don't get bigger than 6". Some of mine are close to that size now, but a lot of them are in the 2-3" range (very mixed size). A bit more herbivorous than many of the fancy plecos, give them algae wafers or gel foods made for herbivores.

I have a ton of cheap tetras on sale this week, so stock up. In addition I have all sizes of black angels on sale (plus a mix veil angel). Nearly all of my angels are Florida bred, and they have been holding up really, really well. These black angels look even darker in my tanks than they do in the picture below, but it's not a very transparent tank so I had to pull them out for pics.

Please give a call if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    Tetras & Other Characins
Florida-bred jumbo neons are seriously jumbo, they're big, impressive, and I have them on sale this week. Pastel (gold) neon tetras are nice too, a lot bigger than usual. Longfin serpaes are still big with great long fins. Candy cane tetras are beautiful. Some other Florida fish that look good right now include huge X-ray tetras, gold pristellas, longfin blushers, black skirts, nice size orange von rios, glolights, head & tail lights, and big red-eyes.

Glass bloodfins are in stock from Indo. They're a lot more translucent than a bloodfin (hence the name) and less nippy. Very active, this is a good looking, cheap, and peaceful community fish that's not in box stores. Everyone should buy this fish. New gold pencils came in bigger that the last couple sets and have a lot of red already. Another cheap and pretty community fish. Various other far-east farm fish that look good include rummynose, green fire tetras, big blue kerris, balloon red-eyes, and very nice Congo tetras.

Flagtail Prochilodus came in pretty good size this week, a little bigger than what I've been seeing lately. Emperor blue hooks get more blue ever week. On special this week. Red hooks are decent size too. Green neons are small but very bright. Ruby tetras are even smaller but they are getting some color. Flameback bleeding hearts look great, brighter than the standard bleeding hearts, and with bright red eyes. Still have a handful of very nice and well-established Exodons.

    Barbs & Other Cyprinids
Florida-bred black ruby barbs are back in stock and I wish I was more excited about that. They're not tiny, but they are small, and definitely too small to show color. They're going to look a lot like a tiger barb to most of your customers. Large tiger barbs are still huge and impressive. Mediums are a lot bigger than the regular tiger barbs. Rosy barbs are nice size but a little female heavy. Gold zebra danios, giant danios, brilliant rasboras, and veil-tail cherry barbs all look good too.

Redline rasboras are in from Indo. This is a confusing fish. They come from super soft, acid, battery acid like water. I wouldn't expect them to thrive in Florida water but they've been incredibly hardy every time I've had them. But they have never shown more than slightest hint of color here. You'll need to put them in soft acidic water if you want to see them fired up. They're kind of like long skinny and super bright glowlight tetras when they're in full color, with a crazy bright red striped down the side of the fish. They're kind of like a bait fish when they're not fired up.

Purple rasbora hets are in stock again. These are the smallest rasbora hets I've ever seen, but they are showing their adult color. It's a neat pattern/color mutation, just make sure they're only with very small fish. Asian rummynose are slightly bigger than the purple hets, meaning still really small, and they have no color. You'll have to be patient with these.

Other import cyprinids that look good include snakeskin barbs, roseline sharks, red panda barbs, and checkerboard barbs (small but with pretty nice color). Platinum green tiger barbs still look great, and they're a lot bigger than the standard green tiger barbs.

    Livebearers
Real light on swords this week. Best looking Florida swords are the marigolds, with a decent number of males in the tank. Import calico sankes are still looking really good. Lyertails are mostly red and very nice. Firecracker swords look great as usual; they're huge and deep red.

Blue mickey mouse platies are huge and look great. Green lantern aka black platies are pretty, with a nice green sheen over the whole body. Some other platies that stand out include big gold twin-bars, sunset wags, gold mickeys, and yellow calicos.

Best guppies are red tux. Pretty good size tails and great color. The white dumbos aren't white but they are super nice, more of a gold dumbo this week. Gold/red tux, red dragon dumbos, blue mosaics, Japan blues, green Endler's, and ocean blue guppies all look good too.

Gold panda lyretail mollies are big and bright with nice fins. Black lyertail sphenops are also big. Skip the standard black sphenops, they're small. Gold sailfins are limited but what I have look great. The assorted balloon mollies actually caught my eye as looking really good. Not sure I've ever said that before and I feel kind of dirty typing that out, but it is a good looking tank and they'll sell well for you.

    New World Cichlids
Got in a new set of Indo tank-raised Apisto agassizii 'double red'. They're more like double orange, or double yellow-ish orange, but very pretty. Bodies are blue/green and bright. Listed as mix-sex but they're very heavy males so they should sell well. Also got in very limited numbers of bigger uaru from Indo.

Platinum parrots may be an abomination but they look good and they're going to sell well. They've gotten a lot bigger lately and have a nice sheen on the body. This is one of the convict parrot types so they'll stay smaller than the blood parrots.

Florida-bred German blue rams look fantastic. The regular size is running big and the mediums are even bigger and spectacular. German blue rams look great too. Not exactly solid black but a very deep blue. I'd probably sell just as many and be more accurate if I called them indigo rams.

I am getting a few more common cichlids in this week. They go fast, but as of today I have small firemouths, convicts, pink convicts, managuesne, Texas cichlids and green terrors. They are all OK, not big but not grossly undersized either. EB acaras are good size and beautiful. Not as cheap as the other common fish, but they're way, way nicer.

I do have plenty of less common fish here too. The Rio San Juan nics are super nice, with lots of blue and orange in the fins. They're a long way from full color, but they are starting to show how much nicer they are than the regular Florida aquarium strain. Bifasciatus and melanura are both small and silver but will be awesome in a few months. Myersi are small but growing fast and super hard to get as tank-raised fish. Medium spectabilis are good size, medium argentea are nice and bright, and medium istlanum are gorgeous, tons of blue even at this size.

Pikeapolooze was a success and I sold out of most of what I had. I do still have a handful of compressiceps pikes, which I thought was the best value. Super cool dwarf pike that acts like a pike, not like a skinny Apisto.

If you need big show fish I got that covered. I have new jumbo green terrors that are super nice but also super limited. Jumbo chocolate cichlids are pretty too, just not in a colorful way. XL trimacs are very nice, they've been one-per-tank for a couple weeks so their fins are looking good. Jumbo true parrots are very nice and on sale this week. They're discounted because they're getting some pitting in the face and I'd like to see them go to a good home.

Their bright red eyes indicate they're filled with the anger of 1000 chihuahuas.

    Old World Cichlids
Got a couple new items this week and I'll be restocking with a few more fish on Monday.

Snow white socos came in this week. They're pretty nice size. Just about solid white fish with bright red eyes, which is a little different than the albino zebras that retain a pattern, just in shades of pink and white. Chipokae, exasperatus, redhead macs, cobalt zebras, medium OB zebras, and medium socos all look good too.

Got in new venustus. They are very mixed in size, and probably mixed with other Nimbochromis too, but overall they look pretty good. Lots of yellow and a nice giraffe-like pattern. Blue dolphin moori have been coming in for a couple weeks now after a long absence. Nice strain that shows pretty good blue even at this size. Still have a couple big fuscos, a few big 'asst haps', nice red fire peacocks, and great looking assorted OB peacocks.

For Vics, I still have about a dozen piceatus. One of the rarest fish I've ever had here. Nearly extinct in the wild, and moving so poorly here that no one should count on any Florida farms continuing to raise this fish. Get them in the tanks of your local basement breeder fish geeks or they're going to disappear.

    Catfish and Loaches
Melanistus cory cats that came in this week look great. Pretty good size and solid. Same thing with julii cories. Nice size, and I have lots. Metae from last week are big and nice too. I probably have arcuatus but they're really, really small.

Pleco selection is exactly the same outside of the diamonts I already talked about. The green phantoms are the prettiest, especially the smaller sizes. Blue phantoms get a little more blue every week. Snowballs and zebras are both very nice and a good value.

Farlowellas came in a lot bigger this week. The striped raphaels that came in last week fattened up a bit so I got a pic. There's a lot of these long-nosed Orinocodoras mixed in with standard striped raphaels. Banjo cats are pretty good size too.

Import catfish are typically all South American, but I have a new far-east import this week. I'm back in stock with moth cats aka stone cats aka anchor cats. And that string of names is bigger than the fish. This is a very small species, good for nano tanks. They're small enough to work as a tankmate with things like chili rasboras. They always hold up well here, and while they're not big or colorful they are cheap, and that's a big plus right now.

I also have big Burmese sun cats. They look amazing, and they're not crazy pricy. Very surprised they're still here as it's hard finding them at this size.

For domestic fish, I restocked on large albino bushynose and this set may be even bigger than the last. I still have a few super-red bushynose in a medium size. Got all the Synos you could want, including nice 'black panther' multi crosses, oversized eupterus (every size on the list is oversized), gold nigrita, and large UD cats. Venezuela black cories are exceptional as well, decent size and solid black.

Borneo sucker hillstream loaches are back in stock. They're pretty small but this fish always does well. Neat spotted pattern on most of them in this set. 'Borneo sucker' is a bit of a catch-all name and there are many related species that may come in with this name. Care is the same for all of them; lots of current, high oxygen, and plenty to graze on.

    Other Fish
Daisy rice fish are still in stock. Related to the medakas up top, they are a little smaller and a lot prettier. This is a tropical species, so better suited for the temps in a tropical community tank. They are super active, bold, and showy, but all of that without being aggressive. Also not that expensive. These should be a staple in the fish trade. They even have a pretty good name, and it's way easier to pronounce than medaka.

Tank-raised panda garras are good size, a little bigger than usual. They're also more panda-y this time as the last few batches have been almost unicolor. They'll sell better as panda algae eaters. They're not strictly eating algae, but scraping biofilm is functionally an algae eater in a fish tank.

Kamaka rainbows are very nice size and pretty. Yellow rainbows are even bigger and brighter but I can't use the same species for pics every week. Boesmanis got a lot smaller and less colorful this week, wait to order these if you can. I think I'll have more red fish next week, millennium and/or red rainbows. For smaller fish, the gertrudae look really good, and the signifer are even better, lots of yellow. Featherfins continue to come in big and impressive.

Florida gourmis keep getting a little smaller. Or a lot smaller in the case of pearl gouramis (don't order those right now). Opalines are decent, blues are a little smaller, golds are a little smaller than that. Import gold giant gouramis are very nice. Blue paradise and albino paradise are both small but colorful. Still have a few lingering sparkling gouramis.

Various other odds and ends that look good include red-cap orandas, black ranchus, silver arowanas, spotted puffers, one arrowhead puffer, 6" silver arowanas, orange gobies, and black ghost knives.

    Shrimp, Snails & Other Inverts
Got in more 'assorted rabbit snails' and 'blue' rabbit snails; both of them are pretty much all Faunus snails. Which are still neat, just not the same thing. If you need rabbit snails get the orange rabbit snails, they are what they're supposed to be.

Florida ivory mystery snails are the nicest mystery snails today. Mix is pretty good, and golds are too much smaller.

Restocked on red crystal shrimp, and these are the very cleanly patterned Singapore shrimp. Orange shrimp are in stock and pretty good size too. Red rilis, black rilis, and blue shrimp are a little smaller.

    Saltwater Corals
The Saltwater stock-list gets sent out on MONDAY afternoon.

In saltwater, we offer tons of top-of-the-line corals.  If you need really nice frags to sell for $10-15, we've got you covered.  If you want a $400 show piece unique Australian brain corals, we've got that too.  Tons of the coral frags are aquacultured in-house and are named lineage pieces of various SPS and LPS.  Import frags that are MADE in-house are also available, and are great options to get slightly bigger pieces that customers want like torches, hammers, blastos, acans, zoas, etc.
