OB Red Empress |
|
Hey Folks,
Tons of cool new stuff in here this week. Coinciding pretty well with bad weather up north. I got in a little variety from Colombia, a few new far-east fish, and more than a few new Florida fish. And don't forget my new Celestial Yellow GloFish cory cats, available exclusively to Certified GloFish Retailers. Lots of great specials this week, including tiger barbs, neons, and angels. They're not the most exciting fish I have here, but these keep the lights on a lot more than some stupid rare cichlid that I get excited about.
My prettiest new fish by far are the OB red empress. Crazy bright blue and red, these fish are outstanding. I also have a brand new hybrid hap. Electric blue yellow-blaze haps are a new ahli/lithobates cross with some other mystery haps in the mix. Bright blue fish with white and yellow dorsal blaze. They best part of them being a cross is that they don't fire down. A courting male lithobates is one of the best looking fish you can put in a tank, but if they're with other haps they're almost always one of the least dominant fish in the tank, and consequently lose their color. These crosses are a lot more likely to keep their color.
Smokey pinoy angels that came in Monday are exceptional. A lot bigger than I expected, and they have very prominent blue cast. While that's expected with pinoy angels, it's not always this noticeable. Both the standard-fin and veils are large, but the veils are consistently larger and worth the higher price.
Orange gobies are in from Indo. If you're wondering why they're called orange gobies it's because that's how they were invoiced to me. It's definitely not orange and I'm pretty sure it's not a Stiphodon either (also how it's invoiced). My best guess without digging too much is a Lentipes, but I'm not certain of that. They are translucent, with a marbled pattern. Pretty sure if you feed them a lot of orange flake food you'd see it in their gut and then they'll be orange. I think this species gets orange in it's fins when it's fired up, but the name is very inaccurate right now. While it's not orange it is a really neat fish. They hop around the bottom. The gobies in this group are all pretty similar (as far as I know); true freshwater fish, high current areas, and feed by grazing and picking from biofilm.
Remember this time last week when I asked you to comment on the Banggai cardinal ESA issue? And you probably didn't do it. You're in luck. Comment period extended to 12/15. I know it's a saltwater fish but the precedent this would set could have real significant impact on freshwater fish. More info on the NAIA website and you can go here to comment.
Thanks,
Joe Hiduke Sales Manager Nautilus |

Tiger silver dollars are available this week. I haven't seen this fish in years so I'm pretty excited to have this as a Florida-bred species again. They're decent size, with a nice red anal fin, and are showing noticeable stripes. They're going to eat your plants like any other silver dollar, but they'll look good doing it. I've seen some big tiger silver dollars in public aquariums that have a great green sheen over the whole body. Really pretty when they get big. They'll get about 7" full grown, and like most characins they're schooling fish so they'll need a lot of room as adults.
Plenty of more common and less expensive tetras that look good too. Florida-bred red-eyes, head & tail lights, neons, white skirts, candy cane tetras, longfin serpaes, and longfin black skirts are all on sale this week for a great price. Every one of those is pretty good size right now. Some other Florida fish that are big and nice include x-ray tetras, penguins, pastel gold neons, Colombian tetras (big but not very blue yet), glowlights, longfin blushers, and bloodfins. I have new albino silvertips in this week that I wish I was more excited about. This is a great strain, and the big fish in the tank look amazing. And they're mixed in with some microscopic tetras. If you're patient they'll be awesome.
Emperor blue hooks also came in this week, so I have all the big round silver fish to mow down your plants. Much like the tiger silver dollars, these are very silver dollar like, but fancier. These are wild fish and a lot bigger than the tiger silver dollars. They'll get more blue than the pic below shows, and the black bar will get more prominent as they acclimate. Also have quite a few standard red hooks too.
Last week's diptail pencils look a lot more stable this week, a neat cheap import. Green neons are very small, even for green neons. Red phantoms got less red this week, but they should color up more as they settle in.
For far-east farm fish, I got in more pencilfish. Gold pencils are in from Singapore. These are another beckfordi variety, with red spots at the base of the fins. A great looking fish that's cheap, different, colorful and peaceful. Got in some new mixed-sex Congo tetras. They're a fair bit cheaper than the all-males. A little smaller, and they still look a little male heavy so a pretty good value. Various other Asian imports that look good include decent size black phantoms, rosy tetras that are small but way bigger than normal, and green fire tetras. |

I have new tinfoil barbs that are almost certainly a mistake. These are quite a bit bigger than what I usually have available. The standard types already have nice red on the tail, and the golds have red eyes. Granted, these are kind terrible fish, but for your customers with big tanks they make a great dither fish for big cichlids and catfish. And they're way better for tanks than pacus.
The rest of this category is going to sound just like last week. Red panda barbs are nice size and plenty big enough to color up in your tanks. Platinum green tiger barbs are big and bright. Roseline sharks are still nice size and have plenty of red. Your nano-fish options are emerald dwarf rasboras, and possibly limited numbers of galaxy rasboras and/or Asian rummynose.
Florida-bred veil-tail cherry barbs are still one of the nicest fish here. Standard color and albinos are both outstanding. Albino regular-fin cherry barbs are nice too (but the regular cherry barbs are really small). Rosy barbs and giant danios are both still big and nice as well. |

Might have a few marigold swords left this week. That's the only decent looking Florida sword right now. Import velvet and velvet wag swords are terrible, but pineapples and neons are pretty decent (although still female heavy). Assorted lyretail swords are still fantastic, all red and red wag types and deeper red than my velvets right now. The vampire swords are about the same as this mix right now but more expensive.
Some platies that look good right now include big blue mickeys, red wags, yellow calicos, sunsets, and red tiger platies. Sunset variatus are very nice, and they look more like a variatus than a sunset platy this week. Red-tail black variatus are nice too.
Back in stock with gold and green sailfin mollies, although it's not always enough to get through a whole week. The black lyretail sphenops stand out right now. They are pretty good size with long fins, and the biggest ones are getting orange on their tails. Gold panda lyretails look good too.
Best guppies today include midnights, platinums, pink tux, pigeonbloods, turquoise blue-tails, tricolor dumbos and it may be all different by Monday. |

Florida-bred Geophagus altifrons are gorgeous. I have very limited numbers of 4" with crazy bright blue and red. Way prettier than my pic shows, these fish color down the second they get in a net. I have some 3" as well that are a lot less colorful but a lot more likely to get filled on orders since I have more than 15. Like most Geos, these are laid-back and get along fine with bigger tetras, gouamis, rainbows, etc. I also have a handful of amazing 5" 'Geo' Acarichthys heckeli that already have nice fin streamers, and they'll just get better as they age.
Almost as impressive, the 3" steindachneri are some of the best ones I've seen. They have lots of blue tipping on the scales and red lips. Medium balzani are nice, lots of yellow. Regular size balzani and heckeli are both OK but not much color at that size.
Medium salvini are in stock with very good color. Still have handful of my Rio Usumacinta salvinis too that are pretty close to medium size and have tons of green.
Still have a few myersi basketmouth cichlids, very rare as a tank-raised fish. Also have deppi, a rare Texas cichlid relative with more red and a much worse attitude. Yellowjacket friedrichstahli, blue umbees, way oversized fenestratus (some up to 6"), and Rio San Juan nics all look good too.
Medium German blue rams are a fair bit bigger than the regulars, and the regular size is already very nice. Got in limited numbers of longfin blue rams this week too, far-east imports. EB rams are imports too, and always look good. Indo double-red Apisto aggies have been here at least a month. Super solid, lots of color, plenty of males, and on sale this week.
Various other New World cichlids that look good include huge tiger severums, jumbo true parrot cichlids, 5" and a couple of jumbo chocolate cichlids, electric blue acaras, medium istlanum with awesome color, 4" splotchy red devils, and wild Colombian oscars. |

Finally have some new stuff for this category, with small orders from several different suppliers this week.
Starry night bleekeri cichlids are back in stock for the first time in a long while. Per Fishbase they're not bleekeri anymore. Paratilapia taxonomy is a mess, and if you're conservation minded ignore the species name and focus on the strain/location. These are the green-spot variety, which has smaller spots with a green sheen on the light spots. While these are from Madagascar and only distantly related to Central American cichlids they act a like like guapote type Centrals. They're predatory and relatively aggressive. They'll even work in display tanks with Centrals and can hold their own with most moderately aggressive species. These aren't small fish, with max size over a foot long. But they do mature at a much smaller size. The fish I have in house now are small and brown, but since they mature small you can expect these mediums to turn black real soon. That'll happen faster in your tanks with a few fish versus my tank with 50 pieces. Awesome fish that should be way more popular in the hobby.
One other new fish that's non Rift Lake. I have more Lake Turkana jewelfish. They're even bigger this week. They take a week or two to color up, so get them now because when they fire up in my tanks and I send out pics they sell out in a hurry. Bright red/orange body, black fins, and bright blue spots in the fins. They're also a lot less aggressive than standard jewels. I have 50 in a tank with hardly any nipped fins.
Also a good week for Malawi fish. I actually have mbunas that aren't in Petsmart. Got in a few new varieties this week. Chailosi bee elongatus are the ugliest right now and will be the best looking fish. They're black and yellow with a blue face when they're fully colored. Exasperatus are certainly not rare, but they're a great looking fish. Finally, gold Tropheops are in stock. These are yellow/orange with black fins, and not as aggressive as the zebra types. All three of these are nice size, some of the bigger 'regular' mbunas in stock (along with the oversized redhead macs). I'm back in stock with OB zebras (small) and snow white socos, and still have plenty of chipokae, auratus, red zebras, cobalts, and lots of yellow Labs.
Already featured some great new haps up top, and I also have some new OB jungle haps. These all have some Nimbochromis somewhere in their background, and most of them have rows of red spots on their sides. Pretty good size and super bright. 'Premium OB' peacocks are still awesome, lots of high yellow and pearly blues in the mix (and they should be on my Monday specials). Also have a couple pieces each of the OB and standard sun-stratus Haps, a crazy bright and huge rostratus cross. |

Threadfin farlowellas are in from Colombia. One of the neatest import loricarids I get, they are similar to a royal farlowella but with insanely long fin extensions. They're a bit smaller than the royals, under 7", but with fin extensions that can be as long as the fish. Per Planet Catfish, they prefer to feed on a flat surface like a piece of slate.
Restocked on Colombian plecos this week, with lots of zebras, snowballs, and green phantoms in house. Green phantoms are all over the place on size. Some of the smalls are very nice, some are barely over 1.5". Plenty of bushynose in stock and they look good. Put a few more my Brazilian plecos on sale this week, so the mangos and sultans are a lot more affordable this week.
Last week's rabauti cories are probably my nicest cories and most likely to get filled. Agassizii look good too. New pygmy cories are twice the size of last weeks. New metae are pretty nice as well. Punctatus are a little small. Arcuatus are very small. Should have limited numbers of very nice gold/greens.
A few other imports that look good include decent size pictus cats, even bigger four-line pims, gulper cats, Colombian sharks, farlowellas, BB cats, and huge jelly cats that should have sold out months ago.
Still have some of the outstanding tank-raised Venezuela black cories. Florida-bred and thriving in Florida hard water. Plenty of nice size and gorgeous Syno angelicus/eupterus crosses, and some smaller but still exceptional 'fake multi' types like the black panther Synos. I've got Indo petricola in stock too, they are really, really small.
Indo tiger shovelnose are also in stock. They're really good size, and they're going to get too big. Treat these like pacus and redtail cats; make sure you're willing to take them back if you're going to sell them.
Tiger botias in stock. Great looking fish with a nice green sheen in their stripes. They're pretty tough too, and can hang with fairly aggressive tankmates. Sewellia loaches are back in stock this week. Still have lots of small yo-yo loaches. |

Fire eels are in from Indo. They're list 6-7", and that's pretty accurate this week. Showing plenty of red. Tire-track eels are also in this week. They're bigger than the fire eels, a good 8"+, and a lot stockier. Still have limited numbers of the smaller Burmese tire-tracks, and a few of the 4+" zigzag eels.
You can stock your brackish tanks this week. I have both Mono argentus and green scats. They've both been here a couple weeks and holding up great. They're both very good size too, not tiny fragile fish. Still have nice rhino gobies too that'll appreciate the brackish water but are too small to go with these monos and scats.
Florida-bred moonlight gouramis are in stock, but they're going to be very limited. They're pretty mixed in size which usually means my supplier will be out very soon. Florida blues got a fair bit bigger, and opalines got a little bigger. Gold gouramis are still small but nice. Platinums are imports and seem too expensive to me but they keep selling. Also have plenty of import gold honey and red honey gouramis. Blue paradise and albino paradise are both imports too. The albinos are less red but more pearly than the Florida albinos. A little different and very neat.
Panda telescope telescope goldfish came in biger this week and look amazing. Might have a few black ryukins left. 4" assorted fantails are awesome. More calicos than red, oversized, and crazy big tails.
Large Deepwater Creek splendida are outstanding. I kept them on special another week since I just got a picture a few days ago. Medium yellow rainbows are still the best looking rainbowfish. Boesmanis are about the same; not big but still pretty good color. Turquoise got a bit smaller but still have plenty of blue. In the smaller rainbows, the featherfins are huge with crazy long fins, and the signifers are big with a ton of yellow.
A few other odds and ends that look good include huge royal clown knives, black ghost knives, brown ghost knives, daisy rice fish, gold killis, 3" rainbow sharks, 5" albino rainbow sharks, new tank-raised (and very small) panda garra, and doctor fish. |

I have yellow-spotted rabbit snails, sort of. No idea if these are right species. As far as I can tell they don't have yellow spots, but the shell looks like towutensis, I guess. Maybe they get more spots when they get bigger? Maybe some of you know more about rabbit snails than I do and can let me know.
Red-spotted nerite snails came in again this week. They go fast, order early if you want them.
Mixed mystery snails are pretty mixed in both size and color. But nothing too small. Ivory snails and gold snails are both good size and nice.
You need to get the orange shrimp and black shrimp. You can make a great Halloween shrimp mix for next week. Florida mixed shrimp are the best shrimp value on the list. New Indo blues and bloody mary shrimp look good, a little smaller than Sinagpore shrimp but with good color.
I have new Borneo panther crabs and they're still one of the coolest things here. |

The Saltwater stock-list gets sent out on MONDAY afternoon.
In saltwater, we offer tons of top-of-the-line corals. If you need really nice frags to sell for $10-15, we've got you covered. If you want a $400 show piece unique Australian brain corals, we've got that too. Tons of the coral frags are aquacultured in-house and are named lineage pieces of various SPS and LPS. Import frags that are MADE in-house are also available, and are great options to get slightly bigger pieces that customers want like torches, hammers, blastos, acans, zoas, etc. |
