    Celestial Yellow GloFish Cory!

    News & New Items
    Hey Folks,

It's new GloFish time! I have a new GloFish cory cat, and it comes in a brand new color. These are Celestial Yellow GloFish cories.

I haven't pushed cories very much since availability has been challenging for the last year, but we're getting real close to target production numbers on all the colors. The last year of cory production has seen setbacks from a hurricane a year ago, to serious freezes over the winter, to extreme heat over the summer. We're finally starting to see a lot better returns from the cory pods as these issues get further behind us.

These yellow cories are a little similar to the green cories, which isn't a bad thing since the greens are fantastic. All of the GloFish cory cats are only available to Certified GloFish Retailers. If you're not in this program you should be. You get discounted fish with free shipping and discounted dry goods, and all you need to do is to have all the lines of GloFish displayed correctly and the GloFish dry goods. Get with your Spectrum rep if you're not in the program. This program is built for independent retailers, to help you be competitive with GloFish.

I'm feeling pretty good about availability on the celestial yellow cories, and probably the orange cories too. I'm a little less optimistic on the green cories. They're going to be hit and miss for a few more weeks. I'm sure I'll fill some this week, but probably not on all orders every day.

Are you a fish geek that hates GloFish because they're 'unnatural'? Suck it up and buy these fish. Y'all know that I'm a serious fish geek, and my customer base skews towards those of you that appreciate rare brown and silver fish (buy my piceatus!). Don't worry, you don't lose your fish geek cred by selling GloFish. They're crazy colorful, they don't die, and they get kids interested in having a fish tank. As a hobbyist and as an industry professional I want to see the hobby grow and I want to get paid. There's nothing on my list better than GloFish for both of these goals.

Shifting to my brown and silver fish, I have some awesome new Cichlids this week. I've had Caquetaia spectabilis before but I've never had them at this size, and they are amazing. Orange chest with blue spangles. These are a basketmouth cichlid, but way more colorful than the more commonly available krausi basketmouths. They also stay a few inches smaller with a max size of ~7.5". They're strongly predatory and aggressive toward conspecifics but not too bad with unrelated fish that they can't eat. Having said that, don't underestimate what they can eat. They have a huge gape and a protusible mouth like the snook cichlids. I also have a new batch of myseri basketmouth cichlids, which are very similar, but with a different color scheme. The myersi are smaller so they have some growing to do before they're in full color. As adults they are silver, with red eyes, blue fins, and a black bar in the middle of the fish.

Daisy rice fish are one of my favorite fish this week and they're not brown or silver. Oryzias woworae, these are related to the Japanese medaka fish, but from Sulawesi so these are way more tropical than the medakas. The males are blue with red fins, females a little duller. They act a little like miniature rainbowfish, super active and frequently courting. A peaceful species, they'll work in a community tank with other small species. Very small species, max size on this fish is about 1.25".

Did you comment on the Banggaii cardinal ESA listing? If not get it done. My quick summary is that prohibiting Banggai cardinals from importation is the same as prohibiting cherry barbs, white clouds, and roseline sharks. They are all endangered/threatened/extinct in the wild, and all farm-raised by the thousands. If a prohibition on importing Banggai cardinals happens you can rest assured that we'll see similar efforts to prohibit imports of these and many other species. Tetras & Other Characins
Wild red phantoms that came in this week look fantastic. They're pretty good size and already bright. The pic below was a day after getting here. They'll keep getting more red as they settle in. Also have a few wild ruby tetras left, but be aware they are tiny right now. Green neons are good size for green neons which is pretty small. Flameback bleeding hearts from Brazil get a little brighter every day. They're not dramatically brighter than the standard bleeding hearts but they will be when they get bigger.

For bigger and/or toothier fish, I still have a handful of Exodons left. Plenty of albino pacus that you shouldn't buy unless you commit to taking them back when they get too big for your customers. Flagtail Prochs are smaller than normal but still a solid 3-3.5". Red hooks are a little small but still very nice. Plenty of silver dollars in stock, a much better alternative to the pacus.

Lots of Florida fish still running big this week. Head & tail lights and red-eyes are both pretty good size and on sale this week. Neither of them are all that flashy but they're long time staples in almost every planogram and always sell. Penguin tetras, Colombian tetras, serpaes, glowlights, gold pristellas, bloodfins, longfin black skirts, and longfin blushers are all big and nice right now. I'm still getting candy cane tetras and they're awesome but I don't know how long that'll last.

Far-east green fire tetras are getting more color and look really good right now. Very bloodfin-like but with a different color scheme. Red beckfordi pencils that came in a few weeks ago look great, really surprised they're still here. They have color, work in a community tank, and they're cheap. Blue kerris, all-male Congo tetras, and rosy tetras all look good too. Ember tetras are pretty small right now but have nice color.

    Barbs & Other Cyprinids
I still have some of the large tiger barbs that were on sale, and I have a lot more medium tiger barbs that are on sale now. Might be a better value than the larges, they're good size and very nice. Florida rosy barbs still look really good too, big and bright and a pretty even sex ratio. Veil-tail cherry barbs are still awesome and I put them on sale this week. Albino cherry barbs and albino veils look good too. Giant danios are huge. Scissortail rasboras are back in stock and OK size.

For imports, roseline sharks keep getting bigger, and they have really good color already. Red panda barbs are closer to red every week. They're not there now, but they probably will be in your tanks. Checkerboards are kind of mixy in size but still look good (and have a few gold barbs mixed in). Gold white clouds are decent size with an interesting peppered appearance. Green tiger barbs are small, but the platinum greens are great size, super bright, and on sale.

Still have a few Asian rummynose. The fired up males look great in my tanks, and will even better when they're in a planted tank.

Still have the best swordtails from last week; the import assorted lyretails, and the domestic assorted XL swords. But they're both getting limited, order early. Florida marigolds, import pink comets (very limited), and import pineapples all look good too. The firecracker swords are pricey but very nice right now.

Blue mickey mouse platies came in big this week. Some other platies that look good include sunset wags, dawns, painted, and very nice gold calico highfin platies. Redtail black variatus are also nice.

Got a couple types of Florida-bred guppy pairs this week. 'Galaxy guppies' are shiny blue with black spots and look way better than I make them sound. That's why I have pics. Also have nice half-black reds. These are sold in pairs only.

Import all-male guppies that stand out today include turquoise blue-tails (biggest tails right now), midnight, platinum, white dumbos, and pigeonbloods. The black Endlers look great, a close to wild-type version.

Green and gold sailfin mollies both look really good, nice size with big fins.

Got in a few pieces of giant curare tiger severums this week. These are the biggest ones I've ever seen. They are long-term captives and they're fat, but they're also a little frayed because they don't like each other very much. I have them separated here but it'll take a little while for their fins to fill in. They're not cheap but they're bigger and nicer than any other severum I've ever seen here.

I have some nicaraguense that you need. These are not the crappy old Florida strain of brassy/coppery colored fish. These are F1 Rio San Juan nics, and they are going to be amazing. If you're old like me you remember nics with tons of blue and orange. These will be colorful, like the nics of years ago. Around 3" and they're getting plenty of orange in the fins, but it'll be a little bit before the body colors up.

Also have fenestratus that are even closer to showing full color. These are great size and should start getting a lot of blue and red very soon.

Herichthys deppi are in stock for the first time in years. A Texas cichlid relative with lots of red in the face, and a terrible attitude. These are small right now and not showing color. Very uncommon in the hobby, probably because it's not easy to breed fish that hate each other.

For common fish, I have jacks, black convicts, pink convicts, and salvinis. Probably have some EB carpintis next week too. If you need bigger fish I have some list 5" salvinis that are oversized and very nice.

5" heckeli threadfin eartheaters look great. Nice fin streamers and nice rows of pearly spots. The medium balzanis got a little small but still have good yellow. 5" brasiliensis are a great value.

Some other Florida fish that look good include 5" and jumbo chocolate cichlids, electric blue acaras, yellowjacket friedrichstahli (on special this week), black umbees, red devils at every size, and snook cichlids.

Wild Colombian oscars are looking great, neat pattern on these. Wild blue rams that came in last week are looking stable and coloring up a little more every day.

Florida-bred assorted medium male peacocks and assorted large haps are the best value Africans, big and lots of color. I still have four big male fuscos, a big male yellow hybrid rostratus, and a couple of OB yellow hybrid rostratus.

Got a new batch of chipokae this week. They are mostly small and very similar to auratus. Cobalt zebras, redhead macs, and red zebras look good too. The standard mixed Africans are pretty much all mbunas right now (like they're supposed to be), and the fancy mix is a fair bit bigger and brighter.

Karambe moori are on sale for ridiculously cheap again. Can't believe this fish is still here. Get them now because I've already told the breeder he should quit raising Tropheus except for kariza kaisers.

    Catfish and Loaches
My most exciting new catfish is Florida-bred this week, not some crazy import. I have Venezuela black cories back in stock. This is a jet black fish with a bit of red in the fins. Gorgeous and unlike anything else that's commonly available. Most often available as Czech or Indo fish, the ones I have are Florida-bred, raised in hard water, and they've held up better than any import black cories. They're almost certainly not from Venezuela but they've been traded that way for so long the name has stuck. Selectively bred schultzi cories which may or may not be synonymous with aeneus depending on who you ask.

Got in a ton of pygmaeus cories this week but note that they are tiny, even for pygmaeus. Gold/greens came in pretty good size and with nice color. Agassizii are sodalis, and they're pretty good size and colorful. Metae are great size but I'm almost out of them. Might have a few punctatus left too.

Colombian zebra plecos are in stock again. They're small but they look really good. Likely to run out of these so order early. Colombian snowballs are very mixy in size, ranging from about the size of the zebra pleco below to about three times that size. Green phantom plecos are all over the place in size. The XL are huge, the smalls are about 1-4". Bit of a gamble regarding the size when ordering the smalls but they are all really brightly colored. Blue phantoms are also pretty small, but showing good color.

Still have some Brazil plecos left. Out of the gold nuggets but I have exceptional mangos, sultans, and huge goldies. Getting low on the candy canes and medusas.

Striped raphaels came in much bigger and nicer this week. Spotted raphaels are a fair bit smaller. Spotted pictus got a big bigger too, they look really good. A few other import catfish that look good include limited numbers of royal farlowellas, four-line pims, BB cats, banjo cats, and gulper cats in a couple sizes,

For domestic catfish, albino bushynose got a lot bigger this week. They're not big, just a lot bigger than they have been. Longfin bushynose are acceptable as well. Lots of nice Synos in right now, including a bunch of UD cats, eupterus/angelicus crosses, true multipunctatus, and gorgeous gold nigrita.

Your loach selection for the week is dojo loaches and yo-yo loaches. The dojos are nice size, yo-yos are OK. Might have some kuhli loaches available as well.

    Other Fish
5" albino rainbow sharks are oversized and super impressive. They are also impressive jumpers, make sure they have a lid on their tanks. Whatever goes out as 3" is likely to more like 4-5", but I think they're most expensive than the 5".

Red paradise fish are back in from Singapore. They are small but already have pretty good color, and they'll have great color when they get a little bigger. Very different than the old Florida 'red paradise' that was basically a blue paradise with a little extra red, this fish doesn't have a pattern, just a solid red body with black and white fins. I also have Florida albino paradise that are a bit mixed in size but overall nice.

Florida golds, blues and opaline gouramis are all a bit small but still a lot bigger than imports. Platinums are imports, and consequently small.

Medium yellow rainbows and boesmani rainbows are the nicest couple rainbows in stock, but I'm tired of sending pics of the same rainbows every week. The next best ones are the kamakas, and the multisquamata are huge and super impressive. Feahterfin rainbows are great size with insane long fins. Males of this species are constantly courting. The large Deepwater Creek rainbows should be here on Monday.

Some other odds and ends that look good include huge royal clown knives, green scats, silver arowanas, tire-track eels, fire eels, brown ghost knives, transparent knives, and baby panda garras.

    Shrimp, Snails & Other Inverts
Both gold and blue mystery snails look good this week. Assassin snails are in stock and on sale for a great price. Still have some orange rabbit snails as well.

Shrimp selection is very limited today. I have black coco shrimp, and I should have Florida assorted shrimp Monday. And hopefully a lot more over the weekend.

Still have a few Borneo panther crabs and they are still awesome.

    Saltwater Corals
The Saltwater stock-list gets sent out on MONDAY afternoon.

In saltwater, we offer tons of top-of-the-line corals.  If you need really nice frags to sell for $10-15, we've got you covered.  If you want a $400 show piece unique Australian brain corals, we've got that too.  Tons of the coral frags are aquacultured in-house and are named lineage pieces of various SPS and LPS.  Import frags that are MADE in-house are also available, and are great options to get slightly bigger pieces that customers want like torches, hammers, blastos, acans, zoas, etc.
