    Dumbo Plakat Male Betta

    News & New Items

    Hey Folks,

For those of you that ordered this week, I apologize if you had issues. I had a perfect storm of problems this week. The majority of it stems from our labor pool. Very brief summary is that the majority of our pack crew isn't here permanently, and last week we had to replace a big percentage of our pack crew. Labor day made it short work week, with only four instead of five pack days, and hurricane Idalia last week caused us to roll over a few hundred orders. I hate making excuses for why things went wrong and nobody here is happy about how this week went. Up until the last couple of weeks things had been going great almost every week for months on end, and I expect we'll get back to that very soon. If you had serious fill rate issues get with your rep, we'll work with you to get your tanks filled. If you didn't order this week than forget all that, we'll be back to normal next week.

I got in a couple specialty Florida fish shipments this week, so I'm back in stock with some less common cichlids (both new world and old world stuff), fancy angelfish, and fancy and/or larger bushynose plecos. In addition I got a lot of variety from Indo, Singapore and Sri Lanka. No South American fish this week but last week's order came in late and I still have most of the cories and plecos.

I have some super nice little cyprinids that came in from Indo yesterday. My favorite from this batch are the drapefin barbs. This is a small species, and frankly not real impressive right now. But if you are patient with these fish they end up looking fantastic. This is very small barb and a peaceful species, not a big nippy rambunctious type. Max size is about 1.5". These come in to me as Oreichthys crenuchoides, but they look more like O. cosuatis

Nice mbunas have been in pretty short supply lately. I didn't get a lot this week, but I do have new 'fancy mix' mbunas. The standard mix has been spotty on availability, and mediocre on color. The fancy mix is a little bigger and a lot brighter than what I've been getting as a standard mix lately. I have a decent number of mediums, and I have very limited number or larges.

Betta selection is really good this week, and I got in some black samurai plakats this week. These are super impressive and always sell well when they're available. I also have some new dumbo plakats with crazy oversized pectoral fins. I think they look kind of ridiculous, but I'm sure these will be popular too.

Please give a call if you have any questions.

    Thanks,
    Joe Hiduke

    Tetras and Relatives
Quite a few Florida fish are running big right now. Diamond tetras are super impressive. Longfin serpaes are still very nice too. X-rays, bloodfins, penguins, gold pristellas, longfin blushers, Colombian tetras, and red-eyes all look good too.

Found a tank of sailfin tetras that came in about a month ago. They've fattened up well and have good color. Very neat tetra that acts kinda like an Apisto. They're cave spawners with loose pair bonds and parental care of their eggs.

Still have plenty of Colombian fish from last week. A little surprised that I still have a lot of the rainbow emperor tetras. Mixed size but even the small ones have color. Ruby tetras have been here a couple weeks and look good. Bleeding hearts, red phantoms (limited), gold tetras, and green neons all look good too.

For bigger and/or toothier characins, I still have a mess of South American gar that are doing great. Still have lots of flagtail Prochs. There's not much difference in size between the two on my list so get the cheaper ones. Exodons are decent size and look fantastic. These are among the best display fish if you have big species tank with lots of them.

Got a few new Indo farm fish this week. I'm back in stock with glass bloodfins, and ember tetras. Import black phantoms are still big and gorgeous, one of the best looking fish here. Some other far-east imports that look good include green fire tetras, blue kerris, albino Congo tetras, and balloon red-eyes.

    Barbs, Danios & Relatives
Got another oddball barb in from Indo. I have 'false eight striped barbs' which is a pretty confusing name. Some places list these  as eight banded false barbs which makes a little more sense I guess, but not much. These are Eirmotus octozona, or something very close to octozona, but all the species are very small and very similar. Regardless of the naming mess with this fish, they are great little fish. Another small species, with a max size under 2". Very peaceful, and considered to be shy but when I've had them before they were out and about all the time. I would expect them to hide a lot if they're kept with more active species. Probably best suited for a species tank or with other peaceful species.

Kubotai rasboras are back in stock again. One of the least impressive fish when you see my pics that turns into an amazing fish when they settle in. Also traded as neon green rasboras, and that's both a better name and an accurate name. They practically glow when they are acclimated and in a planted tank. They are tiny, smaller than galaxy rasboras, so only keep them with other small peaceful fish.

Redline rasboras are also back in stock. These should be beautiful but they never are in my tanks. This is a blackwater fish that holds up surprisingly well in my hard water, but never shows full color. If you have soft water these are a great choice. When they're in soft acidic water they're going to look like an oversized elongated glowlight tetra but with a much brighter red stripe. Click here for pics because my description doesn't do them justice.

Some other far-east fish in stock this week include new platinum green tiger barbs, nice size roseline sharks, galaxy rasboras (small), emerald dwarf rasboras, gold neon rosy barbs, snakeskin barbs, and red panda barbs.

Rainbow dace are back in stock. These are among the best looking fish on the farm, showing a bright blue body and red fins. At least the males are. The females are very drab, but you should try to sell them in pairs because the males will fade somewhat if they don't have girls to show off to. These are US natives and coldwater fish, so they can also work in ponds.

Medium and large Florida-bred tiger barbs are coming in very good size right now. Worth the higher price, although there's not a dramatic size difference between the mediums and larges. Back in stock with albino tiger barbs and they look great. Some other Florida fish that look good include gold zebra danios, longfin zebra danios, giant danios, and albino veil-tail cherry barbs.

Assorted XL swords are by far the nicest swordtail here. These are Florida bred and huge, lots of males, and lots of red in the mix. If you insist on straight color types, all I have are imports and they are very female heavy. The neons are the biggest. Painted, pink comets and pineapples look pretty good too. Calico sankes are small but still very pretty. Velvet wags are small and not very velvety red.

I do have a nice import red lyretail sword this week. These are dramatically different than the Hong Kong red lyretail 'vampire' swords. They're about half the size, the red is much less intense, and I'm not sure that they will all develop a full lyretail. Having said that, they're about half the price of the vampire lyretails. They do have a nice high dorsal fin, like the old school Simpson highfin swords.

Plenty of guppies in stock this week. The koi guppies are one of the nicest right now, a very nice mix of red and white and black. Assorted dumbos, blue Moscows, red tux, and red dragon dumbos all look good too.

Red tiger platies are back in stock. The pattern isn't consistent but they're all a nice mix of red and white. Bumblebee platies, blue micky mouse, big gold mickies, and sunset mickies are all nice too.

Should have some assorted sailfin mollies available next week. Mix may include golds, blacks, silvers and dalmatians.

I have a few big, gorgeous 'Geos' in stock right now courtesy of hurricane Idalia. One of my reps retired (for now) from fishkeeping when his fishroom/garage had two feet of water in it. So I have some outstanding adult Geo abalios and 'Geo' daemon. Wild fish, but tank-raised since they came in at ~2" a long time ago. A few other odds and ends that he brought in include a couple of giant true parrots, a few diadem acaras, a single crassippinnis bumble bee oscar and some F1 true red terrors. On the topic of odds and ends, I have one big lonely istlanum, a gorgeous red-breast longimanus, a half-grown lemon oscar, three or four 6"+ green umbees, about a half-dozen 5"+ brasiliensis, and a couple of big Mayans.

Got some new fancy angelfish in stock this week. I have koi pearlscales for the first time in months. I certainly wouldn't describe them as high-orange kois, but they have some orange and they should develop more as they get bigger. I also have some gold veils, and select gold pearlscales. Still sitting on a bunch of very nice silver pearlscales as well.

Red-spot turquoise severums came in this week in a couple of sizes. They're showing way more color than I expected, and both sizes are bigger than I expected. This is a colorful aquarium strain that already has plenty of blue and red, and they'll keep getting more colorful as they get bigger. I also have limited numbers of red-spot gold severums in stock, and probably have more coming in on Monday.

Green terrors got a bit bigger this week and have some color. Jacks still look good. Firemouths are back in stock and the size is a little better. Convicts and pink convicts are OK. Red devils are very nice in the 2" and 3" size. 'EB carpintis' are still the best value cheap New World cichlid.

3" 'Geo' heckeli are still oversized and look fantastic. I might have a few 5" heckeli too. Medium balzani are showing a big of yellow, and it's a great strain that will have lots of yellow at maturity. Medium brasiliensis have plenty of blue already, very pretty. I do have small altifrons and redhead Tapajos but they are very small, under 2" and no color. Both fantastic fish but you'll have to grow them up a bit before they color up.

I found the Neetroplus that came in a week ago. They're small and gray right now but they grow up to be an neat and unusual fish. They are algae scrapers, and while opportunistic feeders you should give them a diet with plenty of veggies. Their breeding dress is black with a white bar in the middle, giving them an old common name of poor man's Tropheus. Which isn't applicable nowadays since I've probably sold 1000 Tropheus for every Neetropus that's come through here. This fish is scarce in the hobby, in no small part because they're hyperaggressive and harder to tank-raise than many of the more common Centrals. Max size is only around 5" but they still need a lot of room, and a lot of hiding spots and visual barriers if you want to keep them successfully.

Some other less common species include gorgeous Rio Usumacinta salvinis (oversized with color), small snook, black umbees, midas, big zonatus, trimacs, argentea, yellowjackets, and big Tamasopoensis.

I have more of the red warrior flowerhorns in stock. These are a domestic fish, but one of the parents is a big import Kampfa type with a giant stupid hump on it. Hate flowerhorns all you want but your customers love them, they don't die, they're pretty, and you should be making a good mark on them.

Platinum parrots are back in stock but they are tiny. Blood parrots are good size, and blue tiger parrots are pretty good size too.

Restocked with more of the double-red Apisto agassizii this week. Mixed sex with great looking males, females are a fair bit smaller. I also have a new fire gold agassizii. This one is even more distant from the wild types, with a gold body and red down the back. Pretty fish and these tank-raised fish are generally pretty hardy.

Some other far-east imports that look good include chili oscars, lemon oscars, longfin common oscars, flowerhorns, limited numbers of electric blue acaras, and red turquoise discus.

    Red-Spot Turquoise Severum
    Green Terrors

    Red Warrior Flowerhorn
Most of what I have is about half this size, but this gives you an idea of how they'll color up.
    Platinum Parrots
    Red Turquoise Discus
    Fire Gold Aggies
    Old World Cichlids
Got a couple of new Lake Victoria fish this week. I restocked with some ruby greens. This is a really old line, and they look like they're supposed to. The biggest males are showing color already, and the rest of them will soon. Crimson tides are in stock again. This is a Pundamilia type (like the nyererei), but I'm not sure this variety has ever been described. There's some old pics floating around online that show a crazy bright red fish with some black trim. It's beautiful, and I've never seen a crimson tide that looks like that. Still a good looking fish, they get plenty of red and green and blue. This batch is pretty small but the biggest males are already showing a bit of color. I still have some piceatus in stock too, and it makes me cry a little every time I sell a parrot or flowerhorn while these are still here.

I've got Tropheus moori Karambe on sale for a great price this week. Medium size, although if you don't often buy Tropheus they're sized a little different than Malawi fish. The most common size available are the crappy imports that are tiny, maybe 1" (like the duboisi I have now). These are way bigger than the imports and are already showing plenty of red. I still have some lingering Gombi transcriptus, and some import brichardi that are actually decent size.

While mbuna variety is pretty mediocre right now the fish I have are mostly good size and I've got some of the most popular types on special this week. The auratus, red zebras, and kennyi are all on special. I did get in a handful of medium OB zebras with great color. Limited numbers, these will sell out fast. Cobalt zebras, msobos, acei, albino zebras, socos, snow white socos and marmalade cats all look good too.

OB red empress are back in stock this week. They're pricey but gorgeous, and I only have a few pieces. Still have full color adult male fuscos too. Mixed Florida peacocks still look good, and the large yellow OBs are amazing.

Outside of rift lake fish, I still have beautiful nicholsi dwarf cichlids, and lots of Lake Turkana jewels. Kribs are in stock too but the size is pretty bad.

Calico dambas are in stock. These are very rare Madagascar endemics that are critically endangered in the wild. This is another Idalia contribution to my list. They're very well started, but they haven't gotten much of a calico appearance yet. You'll notice some short fins in the pic. This is pretty typical with many of the keineri in the US, almost certainly related to the limited number of founder fish. No new imports on these since the early 90s if I remember correctly. Take it as a lesson to do better in selecting your broodstock if you work with fish this rare.

    Catfish and Loaches

No new cories this week but I may have the most varieties of cories I've seen in a long time. And they're all here at least a week so no fresh imports that I'm iffy about shipping the following week.

The large julii may be the biggest julii I've seen come through here. I also have some very impressive large skunk cories (arcuatus (or more likely granti but arcuatus on my list)). Rabuati are exceptional, showing green stripes down the back I've never rabauti look this colorful. Likely something other than rabauti; cory cat nerds help me out on this one. Concolor cories are small and not that impressive but when they grow up these are nearly black with rusty red fins. Agassizii (sodalis) are very pretty already, nice green sheen over the whole fish.

Pleco variety is the same as last week and the week before and the week before. Medium royals are nice, large royals are nice, skip the small royals this week. XL green phantoms look great, and I'm pretty sure it's the only size here. Colombian snowballs and Colombian zebras are both small but both look good. Smoky peckoltia plecos are a rainbow of every shade of gray. Big wild bushynose are nice and they've been holding up well lately.

A few other South American imports that look good incude big jelly cats, small royal farlowellas, four-line pims, bumblebee cats, and a few lingering spotted shovelnose.

Plenty of Florida-bred catfish in stock this week. I got in a few fancy bushynose this week, including lemon blue eyes that are a fair bit bigger then what I usually get. Super red bushynose are as super red as ever (not that super) but they look really good and are well started. Also got in some longfin lemondrops with exceptional fins. I even have bigger sizes on the standard bushynose, and some gigantic albino bushynose.

In addition to the plecos I've got some new tank-raised longfin green cories. They're real small but they look good, and already have noticeably longer fins than normal. Still have a few of the Florida-bred Venezuela black cories in stock too, and they're holding up great for me. Also have Indo albino paleatus that are nice and really cheap, and some almost cory cat albino hoplo cats.

Florida-bred angelicus/eupterus are running big and look fantastic. Indo petricola are pretty small but are always popular. Florida multis are mixed up still, still on sale cheap as an assorted Florida multi-like Syno.

Got in even more of the 'striped mountain loaches'. They look good, especially at their special price this week. Very sumo loach like, but not as colorful. Yo-yo loaches are in stock. The size isn't great, but better than most of what I've seen recently.

    Lg Julii Cory
    Concolor Cories
    Rabauti Cories
    Lg Royal Pleco
    XL Green Phantom
This might be the smallest of the XL, some are about a third bigger.
    Royal Farlowellas
    Jelly Cats
    Yo Yo Loaches
    Striped Mountain Loaches
    Other Fish & Stuff
Florida flagfish are back in stock. The size isn't great but they have some color and they'll grow fast. One of the few fish that will (sometimes) eat hair algae or brush algae. They can be somewhat nippy so don't put them with slow moving/long finned tankmates. This is a US native killi and while not cold tolerant they are cool tolerant. They'll be fine in a tub outside through most of the year in southern states. Easily tolerate temps into the 50s, and probably near freezing for short periods of time.

Still have lots of gold wonder killis. Nice color, and they live near the surface, filling space that's often unused. Also have some platinum medakas, a killifish relative that is also a temperate fish and tolerates cooler temps. These medekas were bred as tub fish, meant to viewed from above like koi.

Pink kissers are in stock this week. They're pretty good size. I also got in a handful of medium pink kissers that are a bit bigger. Opaline gouramis are nice size with good color. Blues are a bit small but still have color. Lavenders are nice size but they're still lavender gouramis. Still have a handful of import sparkling gouramis, one of the most underrated fish on my list. They're pretty, cheap, and peaceful. If you prefer big and expensive gouramis I have standard and black-eyed gold giant gouramis too.

Multiquamata rainbows that came in last week are outstanding. The color is pretty good but the bigger selling point is the size and the long fins. The name sucks but apparently red dragon rainbowfish is an accepted common name. Goyder River rainbows are nice size and have lots of color. Turquoise are small but bright. Yellows are back in stock but not showing much color right now. Boesmanis are a bit small too.

Various other fish that look good include Borneo tire-track eels, zigzag eels, silver arowanas, Mono argentus that have been here a couple weeks, Siamese algae eaters, albino rainbow sharks in several sizes, super impressive 8"+ royal clown knives, humphead glassfish, rhino gobies, ossa knives, and brown ghost knives.

Another week with a great selection of shrimp. I have new black bees, black rili (more blue than black), black coco, bloody mary, orange cherry, red rilis, and hinomaru shrimp.

I also have new snails. I got in some 'fruit snails' last week that are a very small type of nerite with nubby shells. Also got some red-spotted nerites this week. They are just as super red as the super red bushynose. For domestic snails, the ivory mystery snails are still really big.

    Effective February 1, 2019
Pictures for freshwater DOA claims are REQUIRED.
DOA credits will no longer be approved if there are not accompanying pictures. This is to see the bag sizes, water quality at arrival, if heat/ice packs are present, etc.

Just snap a picture of the bag with your cell phone as you're putting the bags in the tank to float and that will work and should only take literally 10 seconds per bag that contains losses. These will help us to figure out why they arrived DOA and how to prevent it in the future. It is preferred that you email the pictures to your rep, but you can also text them into your rep as well.  Thank you for your understanding and assistance.

    SALTWATER DOA POLICY:
All Saltwater DOA need a clear picture of the fish out of the bag on a cooler lid from your shipment and emailed to your sales rep the day or day after your shipment arrives.  Any fish lost in shipment will be credited if you follow that easy instruction. Fish that die overnight are not creditable unless they arrive in very rough condition (basically dead) and you notify us of the condition with a clear picture of the issue the day it arrives.
