SCIENTIFIC NAME: NERITINA RECLIVATA FLORIDA BRED The Zebra Nerite Snail is named after the striking black stripes against an orangish brown shell. Obtaining an average size of an inch, this species does a fantastic job at getting into small areas to clean. Even though the Zebra Nerite Snail is small, its algae eating abilities are extraordinary! This snail will clean your tank glass spotless and also clean algae off of rocks and even leaves - the Zebra Nerite will not fall off leaves like other heavier algae eating snails may. One downside, or upside depending on the aquarist, is that the Zebra Nerite Snail (and this applies to most other nerite species), is its inability to breed in pure freshwater. This species requires brackish water in order to breed successfully. Because it is considered a tidal snail and can live outside of water for awhile, the Zebra Nerite Snail can tend to wander from a tank. Simply pick them up and put them back inside of the tank and they’ll go back to mowing down algae for you.
