Hey Everyone,
We got some more really neat stuff from Colombia this week that we haven't seen in ages. Flagtail Prochilodus are in and about 5 inches so really solid size. We got about 30 of them in, so not a ton but hopefully getting them this week means they're coming back into season and we should see better numbers in the coming weeks. We also got some Pinktail Chalceus that are maybe the biggest I've ever seen come through here before. Also got a lot more medium Silver Arowana, so we're putting those on special for everybody!
Singapore brought some extremely nice Discus. Picture is above, but we also listed out pics of every type we have in stock further down the email so you can check that out if you're looking for a discus variety.
Got a few more nice FL bred African cichlids too. Restocked on the Ndiwe Fire Blue, since everyone tried buying those this week and we had sold out by Tuesday.morning. Got another dozen or so of those for you. Plus got a new medium sized EB Ahli male since those are always so popular and it's been a while since we've been able to offer those at a good size with color. Also, while not African, we did also get some very good size EB Acaras, and that's another fish that shows it's best color by far the bigger they get. Even if you don't think you can sell many at the large size to people in your area, having 1 or 2 big ones in a display tank will help you to sell your regular sized EB Acaras twice as fast, guaranteed.
One of the fish Im most excited for this week are actually the tiniest, Panda Loaches that just came in from Asia for the first time in about 4 years. They are awesome looking little scavengers, similar in care to Sewellia Hillstream Loaches.
Lastly, I wanted to do something I haven't done in a while, but conversations and requests we've had recently made me realize that maybe it's time for some advice. This week's topic- Rainbowfish and Swordtails: We hear all the time "is there any way you can sell me only male rainbows, I have 20 females in a tank here and nobody will buy them so i just need males". Same for swordtails. Unfortunately, the answer is, No, we can't send you only males, because then the next 2 or 3 stores are going to get stuck with only females and we want to be fair to everyone. However, there is a very simple solution to this "problem". Actually, a couple solutions, which in my opinion every fish store should do.
1. Sell males for a higher price and females for a lower price. When you order the fish, we're charging a price per fish as mixed sex. But nothing is stopping you from splitting them into 2 prices on your end. I would highly recommend figuring your landed cost, determining roughly what you want to sell the fish for and then add 20% to the male price and subtract 20% from the female price. That way you're getting a premium for your more desirable males and not letting that first customer cherry pick those and leave you with a tank of girls.
2. Offer a pair price for Rainbows and a Trio Price for Swordtails. Rainbows are sold in very close to 50/50 ratio from us, and swordtails are usually more like 1 male to 3 or 4 females. So if you don't want to have a specific price for each sex, you could do a "Deal" on trios. Lets say, for example, you sell assorted swordtails for 3.99. Offer a Trio (1 male and 2 females) for $9.99. I promise you you'll start sell selling off those females a lot quicker, because people love a deal.
3. Lastly, regardless of pricing, EDUCATE your customers on why they NEED females. Male Rainbows show better color and "flare" at each other when they have females of the same species in the tank with them. let them know they'll see courtship behavior from them in the morning when they turn the lights on. The tank will truly be a nicer looking and more engaging thing to own with mixed sex verses only the males. For Swordtails, it should be much easier, because you can just remind them that the males hate each other and will bully each other until you only have 1 or 2 left usually. But more importantly, they're easy to breed and they can make lots of baby swordtails with a proper sex ratio. 1 male to 4 or 5 females is preferred for anyone looking to breed swordtails. The males will also chase and harass the females to the point of death by exhaustion very quickly if you have too many boys chasing too few girls.
Hope that helps. If you've never considered the pricing discrepancy, please try it. I think you'll find it works. I employed that first method at the store I managed before I came to be a sales rep here at Nautilus, and we NEVER had tankful of females hanging around.
Check out the pictures and writeups about the specifics below and give your rep a call if you have any questions

It's been a while since Flagtail Prochilodus have been available, and excitingly, they showed up at a really great size! These are the perfect fish if you need a large schooling fish to go in with aggressive larger cichlids or just to fill a bunch of space with something more interesting than silver dollars. The red tail definitely does stand out and makes this a very nice looking fish. |
Pink Tail Chalceus are also back after a pretty long hiatus. These are much larger than they normally come in, probably about 5 inches compared to the average of 3 in the past, and would make perfect tankmates for a semi-aggressive tank of good size. |
Silver Arowana came in for the second week in a row so we're putting them on special. These are about the same size as the batch last week, about 4 inches. Well past the egg-yolk stage where they die if you look at the wrong. Its definitely worth it to get fish of this size compared to those babies you see for 10-15 bucks on other stock lists, because you'll have 75% of the babies die on you or worse on your customers. They never hold up. That's why we never bring them in to sell. |
Skunk Cory Cats came in great size this week and are probably your best bet for a wild cory. This species also seems to usually hold up pretty well and adapt to captivity without much problem. |
Habrosus Cory Cats are back too. We've been selling out every week by tuesday night or wednesday morning, so again i'll say if you're placing your order on Wednesday to pack Thursday, don't expect to get these. But everyone SHOULD be trying to get them, it's the best scavenger for freshwater you can find. Good for literally any size tank, they school together, and they're cheap. |
Brown Ghost knives are average 5-6 inches and are very cheap for what they are. This should be a go-to oddball fish for everybody. |
Bumblebee or "BB" cats are another nice oddball that's inexpensive that every store should carry, They max out around 3 inches so they don't get big enough to eat anything other than neons or other small tetras making it a good catfish for some community tanks. |
Pagoda Snails are back! These are my favorite snail of all time and they're quite rare. We order them almost every week, and the supplier ships them to us about once every 2 years. Get them while you can. These are super unique and cool looking with the spikes all over the shells. Size is on average quite large as you can see here. |
Common Archers came in looking excellent last night. This is the most active and healthy looking batch I've seen in memory. Just make sure to keep SOME level of salt in their tank. They're brackish by nature, but will do fine in freshwater as long as you do have some level of salt added in there for them. |
Panda Loaches are here again! I think Its been about 4 years since I've seen this fish in a tank here, and I'm very happy to see them return. These beautiful little loaches are excellent algae eaters and can be bred in captivity pretty easily, like Sewellia loaches. We are leaving them off our stock list for now, and going to add them on Monday to the "new fish list" after we confirm they've settled in and are good to go. |
I know everyone loves these Glass Catfish, and it's been a couple months since we last had them. They're very limited, so get your order packed early in the week if you're wanting to get a bunch of these. |
Black Ghosts are tank raised from the far-east, and holding up excellently. These TR knives go straight for prepared foods no problem and get along better with each other than wild caught fish do (at least as babies). |
Blood Parrots are everyone's favorite grotesque hybrid. I personally don't get it, but what I like or you like honestly doesn't matter, making money in this industry is just about carrying what your customers like. And your customers love these things for some reason. |
Red Chili Oscars are back and its a really nice deep red group like usual. About 3 inches, maybe a hair over, and they'll be 6 inches in a month if you feed them well. Nothing on Earth grows faster than an Oscar that's being well taken care of. |
Dwarf (Pea) Puffers came back in. Have pretty solid numbers on these guys so should be able to last all week on them. Don't buy 6, you need like 25+. These are a communal puffer, so they do best when kept in small groups, and you should be selling at least 3 or 4 to anyone that wants them from you. |
New male FL bred Cichlids are here: Ahlis! Super rich blue color on these. |
I left this in because these are arguably the best looking fish on the farm and we got more in from the same vendor. |
White Top Afra are still hanging around in small numbers, might be your last chance to get a few. Google pics of adults, it's a stunning fish. |
Medium Chailosi are somehow still here. They're big enough they could be called Large and nobody would complain when they showed up. Males and females, but very male heavy (80% male probably). |
Medium Angelfish are running slightly larger than average and have a lot of nice marbles in the mix this week. usually they're silver-heavy, but that's definitely not the case right now. |
Regular Green Severums are back. I'm not sure why it's become so hard for us to source green severums, these were available on every stock list every week for decades, but lately it's been more and more rare. |
4 Inch EB Acaras are in and absolutely beautiful! The orange tips they get on the dorsal fin is really eye catching on this fish once they're this size. You don't really notice that color on them when they're small or medium size. |
Medium firemouths are on the list this week. Don't expect huge fish, they're definitely bigger than the regular firemouths, but they're not big enough to be super impressive yet. This picture is very representative of what to expect. |
Turquoise redtail male guppy are a relatively new strain we've been bringing in. nice big tails on these. |
Ocean Blue Guppy came in totalyl different than they ever have before. Normally it's a solid blue fish, but this batch has a silver snakeskin type of front half. Very neat. |
Pink Tux Guppy are great size. Smaller tails than many of the other types, but the body and actual FISH of this color variety is probably the biggest guppy available this week. |
Blue Platy are new and super nice looking! They look green out of the water when the light reflects off teir scales at the right angle, but in the tank they do look blue. |
Sunset Platy continue to come in super bright and eye catching. Your customers will definitely see these from across the store. |
Dalmation LT Molly are the biggest and nicest looking medium sized molly we have at the moment. I'd go with these over the silvers or the creamsicles, for sure. |
Medium size Bosemani Rainbows are showing full color. MUCH better use of your money than ordering regular size any time mediums are available. Trying to save a buck on the regulars is the difference between selling out this weekend and sitting on them for a few weeks as they trickle out the door. |
Gold Sailfin mollies are as nice as always. Super bright yellow and orange coloration, and probably 60% males. |
Goyder River Rainbows are looking better than I've ever seen before. |
German Blue Rams are here, but might be the least colorful blue rams i've seen. Even the wild ones look better, honestly. But this is all we could get, blue rams have been extremely limited for months now since the Florida farm is out of them. |
Blue Paradise Gouramis are absolutely massive, and full of great color. These are very close in Bettas in how they act, with males flaring up their tails at each other and looking, frankly, pretty bad ass. |
Electric Green® GloFish® Sharks are back up in bot numbers and size. These are by far the best seller of all the GloFish® Sharks |
Diamond Tetras are running large! Most people have never seen a fully mature diamond tetra, but they get a red dorsal fin and speckles like diamonds all over the body. These are very close to showing those markings. |
Ember Tetras are always a fantastic pick for a nano fish. They show great red color at every size. |
Orange Von Rios are stunning right now, with great size and better color. |
Black phantoms are back and looking as good as ever. The males are super dark and have nice high dorsal fins. |
This is just one example of the 3" Singapore Discus. Very limited but there's not a bad one in the bunch. |
2 Inch Cobalt Discus |
Red Turquoise |
This 2.5" assorted looks to be a Rose Red, If that is indeed the case these guys grow up to be amazing looking. |
Found this Blue Diamond in the 3" Singapore mix. |
Blue Phantoms are still here, this is the same picture we showed you on Monday, but it really captures the blue spots well. |
Green phantoms got a fresh batch this week and the larger size is looking great. |
Royal Farlowella are often overlooked as an algae eater, but are truly effective compared to plecos. |
New batch of far east raised Synodontis Petricola are some of the nicest I've seen come though here. Still small but big enough to be showing their patterned bodies and high contrasting fins. Good value this week. |
